Community Engagement in Israel

Community Engagement in Israel

ICL is a part of life in the Negev area (southern Israel), where most of its plants are located and where most of its employees live. The company sees itself as an inseparable part of the communities in the Negev and believes that community involvement and encouragement of dialogue related to sustainable development are among its responsibilities to employees and other stakeholders. ICL community relations also operate in parallel in the Krayot region in northern Israel, in the vicinity of ICL’s Haifa fertilizer plant and its central research institute (IMI) in Kiryat Ata. \

ICL is involved in more than 50 community projects, working in cooperation with more than 30 non profit organizations.

ICL has local orientation focused on the Negev area and strives to be a significant and influential factor, initiating processes to create strengthened cooperation between industry, the environment and the community. ICL serves as a catalyst for social-environmental processes that foster social empowerment and strengthen local identity.

ICL Employees as Volunteers – To be Involved

ICL believes that good corporate citizenship requires personal involvement, so, in addition to financial assistance, ICL encourages its employees and managers to take an active part in weekly voluntary work. Personal volunteering is usually conducted in the afternoons (not during working hours) in educational, society and environmental organizations.

In 2018, 14% of ICL’s employees in Israel participated in volunteering activities. The total time spent volunteering by employees was nearly 19,000 hours, or 4.0 average hours per each ICL Israel employee.

Employees’ children working in the community

ICL is proud to support this initiative, where children of ICL’s employees (teen-agers) can sign up for paid work at a community non-profit organization (NGO) for a month, usually during the summer vacation. These NGOs include educational, social and environmental organizations. ICL pays the children “salaries” for working at the various non-profits organizations.

This initiative proved to be enriching and an impactful learning experience for the teens, providing them with an important opportunity to learn and to serve the community. The initiative is also beneficial for the different community non-profits.

In 2018, 338 teens, children of ICL’s employees, worked in various community initiatives. The project included a total of 4,256 workdays or 32,900 work hours by the teens. The total project cost for ICL was approximately 360K USD (this cost is excluded from the donations figure reported in the global part of this chapter).
