Managing the Salt Deposit

Managing the Salt Deposit

ICL Iberia’s mine tailing management has a wide reach. The company has implemented numerous measures to control and manage its salt deposits at Suria and Sallent. It manages the salt deposited using Best Available Techniques (BAT based on reference documents published by the European Commission). ICL’s goal is to improve water quality by preventing saltwater from reaching and mixing with fresh water. \
6.3
By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increase recycling and safe reuse globally
6.6
By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes.

In 2015, in accordance with the provisions of the Spanish Waste Management regulation, ICL Iberia submitted to the Government of Catalonia a mining site restoration plan for its two production sites at Suria and Sallent, which includes a plan for handling the salt deposits and dismantling facilities.

15.1
By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.

Our goal is to improve surface and groundwater quality

ICL Iberia has implemented numerous measures, preventative in most cases, to environmentally control and manage its salt deposits at Suria and Sallent. The company’s goal is to prevent saltwater from reaching and mixing with fresh water, and to create a sustainable relationship with the surrounding areas.

ICL Iberia has constructed new collection points, established multiple control points for quantitative and qualitative water analysis. It has also been implementing measures to minimize salt accumulation into the deposits as well as groundwater control measures.

New preventive measures are being implemented in the Súria salt deposit as well. The newest zone was completely waterproofed and a complex drainage system is being constructed. Previously, ICL Iberia carried out an exhaustive research plan including the excavation of trenches and drilling of boreholes to evaluate and assess soil quality at the Suria site, and to ensure that all salty water is properly managed.

The restoration plan approved by the authorities for the Suria site is scheduled to extend until 2094, and for the Sallent site, until 2070.  In 2018, ICL Iberia was authorized to use the Sallent salt deposit for another year, until June 2019, and the Government of Catalonia approved the mining site restoration plan for ICL Iberia’s two production sites at Suria and Sallent, which includes a plan for handling the salt deposits and dismantling facilities.

Running Up the Mountain - Hosting the “Bell Race”

300 runners participated in a unique running competition, organized by residents of the Bages region. This is the third time that ICL Iberia is using the mountain to host the event.
