ICL U.K. Boulby

ICL actively supports its employees and their local communities. ICL Boulby is giving back to its local community with a range of activities.

Pooled Resources Turn Overgrown Eyesore Into Fun and Educational Memorial

The community of Guisborough in east Cleveland, and local employer ICL Boulby have all come together to transform a dilapidated spot at a local school. A pupil at Chaloner Primary school in Guisborough, has died as a result of a degenerative condition. His friends and classmates wanted a derelict courtyard in the centre of the building to be transformed in his memory. But they wanted it to be a lively place for them all to enjoy. The whole community helped in the transformation. One of the final touches was to improve the pond area and ensure it was safe for the youngsters. ICL Boulby sent workers, offering expertise and materials, to tear out the old pond and replace it.

The area is more than just a pleasant place for children to come and take time out, it has an educational purpose as well. It is designed to be a resource to help deliver lessons in science and recycling. Read more

Luke Senior Hall Community Group

ICL Boulby is donating to help cover the cost of essential First Aid training be made available to all ages within the community. This will provide the relevant skills and knowledge to the community and give them the ability to provide First Aid whenever and wherever they may be. In a situation of crisis, the provision of First Aid training ensures that there are First Aid Responders available whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

 The Marske Centre Ltd

ICL Boulby is helping with funding to cover the cost of essential roof repair to the building. Without the community building, there will be nowhere local for the current groups to hold their activities. This means if the building was to close, there would be limited places for social gatherings and the locals would lose the sense of ‘community belonging’. The community group provides activities and classes for a variety of age groups with an average number of visitors. Without it, a lot of the attendees, for example may be elderly and lonely will have very limited places to interact and keep their minds healthy.

The Friends of Saltburn

This group, which was established in 1990, seek funding to contribute towards the cost of Christmas lighting around the town centre. Projects such as this contributes tremendously to the amount of visitors to the town, meaning that the smaller, local companies and organisations that are in Saltburn benefit from this. It also creates a sense of pride and belonging within the community. This well-established group has contributed to the local community for over 28 years and brought lots of activities to the town to keep Saltburn alive. ICL Boulby’s donation for the Christmas lights will further increase the community spirit and encourage more visitors from outside the area to come and appreciate the beautiful coastal town.

Whitby Hidden Impairments Support & Help

WHISH is a long established voluntary group, started in 2008. They are seeking funding to help continue and develop their program of activities and support for children and young people with hidden impairments in Whitby. The application would be to fund a “Stress Management” session for the children and their families. WHISH provide a variety of youth group activities, as there are very limited out-of-school activities for young people in Whitby with special or additional needs. This course provides significant support for all those involved. Participating in WHISH activities will enhance the health and well-being of participants, improve confidence and self-esteem; giving children with hidden impairments an opportunity to do things like their peers, to access activities most children can take for granted, learning and having fun together.

With the high demand for girls and ladies teams within the area, the club provides the area a great sense of pride, as the club is Guisborough’s only female football club. The girls will have a safe, enjoyable place to learn, socialise, build confidence and be part of something special within their own town.

The group would like to use the community funding grant to contribute towards the cost of involving the judge again in the run up to the 2019 competitions, so that they can increase their success, raise awareness of the group and expand on their healthy impact within the community.

Whitby Boxing Club

ICL Boulby is helping with contributions towards covering the cost of new equipment for the club such as head guards, gloves and punch bags, as the equipment is now starting to become overused, frail and unusable. The club has helped children build self-esteem, lose weight, improve fitness, overcome bullying, build social skills, and has also taught them respect and discipline. By providing the club with up to date tools and equipment, they can ensure the longevity of the club and it’s services.

Guisborough Rugby Club

Guisborough Rugby Club is a club which has varying ages and genders within their teams. ICL Boulby is helping with funding towards the installation of security fencing and gates to protect their pitch, which is used for competitive matches and training, from dog fouling, trespassers, thieves and bike nuisances.  The aim of this project is to provide a safe, secure and clean area for the club to implement their training without running the risk of contracting diseases from dog excrement or hurting themselves on bike ruts. This will also help the club look much more formal when visiting teams come to play competitively.

ICL Boulby mine is not open to the public, but ICL does offer local community groups a unique way to raise money by donating an “Auction of Promise”. This is to give a group of up to five people the lifetime opportunity to visit ICL Boulby underground operation.
